Eliminating Single-Family Homes

Single-home zoning is a type of land-use zoning that restricts the use of land within a designated area to single-family homes. This means that only one single-family residence is allowed on each lot within the designated area. The goal of single-home zoning is often to maintain the character and density of residential neighborhoods and to prevent the construction of multi-unit buildings or commercial developments.

There are several ways that individuals and community groups can fight proposed zoning changes that they believe will negatively impact their neighborhood.
  1. Attend public meetings: Zoning changes must go through a public hearing process, and citizens are usually given the opportunity to voice their opinions. Attending these meetings and speaking out against the proposed changes can help to raise awareness and build opposition.
  2. Organize a grassroots campaign: Communities can organize petitions, rallies, and other forms of grassroots mobilization to build public support for their cause.
  3. Consult with legal experts: There may be legal grounds to challenge a zoning change, such as violations of existing zoning laws or discrimination. Consulting with a lawyer or legal expert can help communities to identify and pursue legal avenues for fighting a proposed change.
  4. Work with local elected officials: Communities can also work with their local elected officials, such as city council members or county supervisors, to express their concerns and try to influence the outcome of the zoning process.
  5. It is important to note that the process of fighting a zoning change can be difficult, time-consuming, and resource-intensive, and the outcome is not always certain.
